Apartment complete refurbishment and Interior design

Modern but warm

Status: Completed

Location: Madrid, Spain

Scope of works: Complete refurbishment and Interior design

This is a flat in Madrid, Spain, close to the Retiro Park. The main feature of this project is the use of wood in a contemporary style. This proposal required thoughtful attention to detail, many bespoke features, thorough organisation of the space, internal views , and built-in storage.

Clients´ Brief:

The clients´ brief was to produce a clean, simple, and well-organised design, in which the details play the main role, and a semi-open plan that includes entrance, living area and a kitchen which can be insulated if desired.

The main open-plan area has been designed to surround a central piece, which consists of a solid wooden block which, due to its position and shape, can be regarded as a sculptural volume whose four sides distribute four different spaces and functions around it:

The front face is opposite the entrance, which it defines, with wardrobes behind floor-to-ceiling doors which have hidden hinges and handles so that they look solid.

One of the two sides hides a floor-to-ceiling ‘pocket’ sliding door that covers the entrance into the kitchen, and the other is a plain wooden wall, which faces the living and dining area. The rear face is opposite the corridor, and includes a desk and office area. So, in essence, this is an example of how a simple idea can subtly divide and distribute a larger space.

Open Plan Kitchen:

The layout being of the ‘open-plan’ type, the materials used for the kitchen area had to blend with those in the rest of the flat. We therefore carefully organised this area so that most of the kitchen´s appliances are in the side of the kitchen that cannot be seen from the rest of the open plan or from the entrance. Those that can be seen are integrated, and the side-to-side worktop/splashback is in stone. Although it is in a kitchen, it blends well with the entrance, the living space and the entrance views.
