Open Plan Micro Living Unit
Full of natural light
Status: Completed
Scope of works: Complete refurbishment and Lay out
Here the foremost objective was to fit a separate bedroom and an open-plan layout incorporating living-room, kitchen and office/library in just less than 500 sq.ft. of usable area. This is a good example of space optimisation through design which results in a cosy, clean, light and spacious one-bed flat.
Space is not only about numbers, it is also about light, volumes and views, and the way these are arranged and designed defines quality, feeling and sensations. When these factors are carefully considered, a 500 sq.ft. flat can feel and be used as if its area was 800 sq.ft.
The main decisions taken to enlarge and optimise the space were:
1-Expanded Views: openings and doors were designed so that as you enter the flat you can see though the whole space and end window, so “no-end view”.
2- Transitional corridor space differentiated from living space or office , also the kitchen area is related to this transitional space as well as the bathroom entrance.
3- Kitchen Design: Minimalistic and white to be blended with the rest of the room elements and walls, which are painted in white to reflect the light as much as possible.
4-Furniture: A rug defines the living room area, a low bookshelf sets and separates the office area , and for the chairs and coffee table we have chosen materials that let your view and light through, so these do not fill up the reduced space: tempered glass for the coffee table and metal bars and leather for the chairs, all in white to blend with the walls and reflect the maximum amount of light.
5-Television: there is no television, as it would be a large, black element that would ruin this reduced, small space. Instead, there is a 100” manual cinema screen recessed into the kitchen top ceiling gap , the HD projector being placed under the glass coffee table , as can be seen in some photos.
